Explore how God equips His church

Gifts, callings, and leadership expressions

Explore the 29 areas used in the GHBC Spiritual Gifts and Ministry Expressions Discovery. Each area includes a brief definition, an expanded explanation, and relevant Scripture references.

Why 29 areas?

A careful biblical framework

Scripture does not present all 29 areas as distinct spiritual gifts. GHBC uses three categories to preserve useful ministry language while being clear about what the Bible explicitly names.

18

Biblically named gifts

Direct biblical gifts or close ministry-gift equivalents named in the primary gift passages.

5

Ministry roles & callings

Biblical ministries or Spirit-enabled abilities that Scripture does not explicitly call spiritual gifts.

6

Leadership expressions

The biblical gift of leadership differentiated into six ministry-focus areas.

See the primary biblical passages and notes

Romans 12:6–8 names prophecy, serving, teaching, encouragement, giving, leading, and mercy. 1 Corinthians 12:4–11 names wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and interpretation. 1 Corinthians 12:27–31 also includes apostles, prophets, teachers, helping, and guidance or administration.

Ephesians 4:11–13 describes apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers as people Christ gives to equip the church. 1 Peter 4:10–11 broadly groups gifts into speaking and serving.

Craftsmanship has strong support as a Spirit-enabled ability in Exodus 31:1–6. Hospitality is commanded near gift discussions in Romans 12:9–13 and 1 Peter 4:9–11. Scripture names apostles; GHBC expands that area as “Apostleship and Church Planting.”
